Can insomnia and digestive problems start after a month quitting smoking cigarettes ?

It has been about almost 6 weeks since I quit smoking and the past week I feel horrible. I hardly sleep and the sleep I get is very shallow, I feel constantly tired and lightheaded and sick. Also my stomach seems to be upset. I have no fever which would have indicated another illness. So I am wondering can this be caused by the fact that I quit smoking. From what I’ve read usually the withdrawal symptoms are worst the first two weeks, but I felt fine at the beginning and didn’t notice any withdrawal. Can these symptoms be caused by smoking withdrawal ? I am 22 and have smoked since 16 about a pack a day.

Nicotine is a stimulant and now that you don’t have it any more, your digestion is acting up. You can compensate for the missing nicotine by putting spices with your food. In the morning use cinnamon on cereals. For lunch and dinner consider hot pepper sauce, curry, pepper or vinegar where appropriate. If you find that these don’t help, then stop and try peppermint tea to calm your stomach. Vinegar with your meals will make your stomach retain food longer and digest it more fully which may also help you. You may want to switch to simple bland foods like oatmeal or rice for a day or two to give your stomach a chance to settle down.

It’s normal to feel tired, light headed and sick when your stomach has been upset for a few days. No nutrition = feeling crappy.

Glad to hear you stopped smoking.

If I quit smoking today, for how long would I test positive for cigarettes in my blood stream?

admin answers:

I used to work as an insurance agent. We did an oral swab test to test for nicotine. I think it showed for up to one month, but that’s just what I heard in training.

I would say six months, just to be on the safe side.

What you could do is apply for coverage now, and ask your agent if in a year you could re-negotiate your premium to a non-smoker rater at your attained age. That would probably be the best thing.

If that doesn’t work, I would go for term insurance for one year, and then buy permanent coverage when you are eligible for a non-smoker rate.

Does Hypnotherapy really work? What can I expect to have to pay and how many sessions?

I have been doing a lot of research to find out if hypnotherapy actually works. the issues I have are very quickly destroying my marriage, my main issue is anger, but that word does not seem to even come close to the nuclear explosion that takes place in my brain, it is literally like this rage is a beast inside my head that just takes over. I also want to check into the hypnosis for quitting smoking and for motivation but to quell / kill the rage is priority number one.

is it possible to handle multiple issues in a session or are they worked on one at a time?

admin answers:

Why worry about being a picky eater if you are healthy and getting all the nutrients you need to stay healthy.
Hypnotism can work if you believe strongly enough that it will.
Google the foods that you like and see if you are getting all the vitamins (better from food than in tablet form) and minerals you need.
Cheaper than going to a hypnotist if your diet doesn’t jeopardise your health.

I have smoked my whole life, i have tried the hypnosis, he couldn’t put me under. He finally asked if i was a christian and i said yes, his response was he has never been able to have it work on a christian, because it opens to many doors. The only thing i have found that worked was a pill prescribed by my doctor. It is for depression but somehow it works. It worked the first day. I am sorry i don’t remember the name, but they now sell it as smoking cessation. Hope this helps

Hi MiMi..

Sure sounds like me.. I smoked for over 40 years, and tried most of the methods, known to man, to quit smoking.. Some of them worked for a time, until i would have just one… One of course would be a pack day, and on and on… I tried patches, pills, herbal concoctions from the health food stores, tea sticks, you name it!!

The good news is that as of know typing this response i have over 5 years nicotine free.. What ended up working for me, was that like, you i asked some other smokers who had quit what worked!!! Well i found that for me that, the “biggie” was that i had to quit trying to do it alone.. I joined a support group.. That feeling that you mentioned about feeling guilty, we all felt that way!!! I found the support of other quitters was very helpful, as well as the experience of more seasoned members..

I am a member of Nicotine Anonymous and attend meetings both locally, and on line.. On line meetings are as close as your computer, and your welcome to attend, while still smoking, before attempting an actual quit..

Good luck on your decision to quit there is no wrong way to quit!!! It’s a big deal in any ones life..

Nicotine Anonymous is a Non-Profit 12 Step Fellowship of men and women helping each other live nicotine-free lives. Nicotine Anonymous welcomes all those seeking freedom from nicotine addiction, including those using cessation programs and nicotine withdrawal aids. The primary purpose of Nicotine Anonymous is to help all those who would like to cease using tobacco and nicotine products in any form. The Fellowship offers group support and recovery using the 12 Steps as adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous to achieve abstinence from nicotine.

Any Quitting Smoking Tips?

So, I’m 22 years old have been smoking for the past 6 years. Last week I went to the doctors to get help with quitting smoking. He prescribed me some Bupropion, and today I picked up a box of Nicoderm. Tomorrow is day 1 of quitting and I was wondering what are some tips to help fight off cravings of smoking? Besides the medication and patches, what else can I do to help me?

admin answers:

Yes, STAY ACTIVE. Remember, your cravings will be intense, but they ONLY LAST A FEW MINUTES. If you stay active, you are less likely to give in.

For me, I would go through the motions. Use a pen or have something in my mouth and inhale as if I were actually smoking. Sometimes this helped, sometimes not.

Also, very easy to gain weight because you start wanting to substitute one craving for another. When this occurs, just start jogging, get on a treadmill, go for a run, do something strenuous to help keep your mind off of it.

The first couple days will be hard, but will also be the easiest… The 3rd and 4th days, your body is really craving that nicotine… Use the patches, but dont go nuts. You can end up in the hospital with an Over Dose of Nicotine…

Each day after it gets less and less, but prepare yourself for the worst part. Those cravings will never go away 100%. When you smell it, when you drink coffee or do something you used to associate with smoking it will kick in, even years later. You will learn to live with it and it will be nothing compared to the next couple weeks. If you can keep it up for 2 weeks, it just gets easier and easier..

You can do it, though – good for you and dont give up… It will be rough, but you CAN do it…

Good luck!

You just need more willpower. It’s kind of like a caffeine addiction, but with no physical effects. You may be bored and irritable for a week or so, but if you really want to quit you’re just going to have to deal with it. It’s not like you’re trying to quit heroin here. Try to find something that will keep your mind off it (i.e. Exercise, video games, hang out with friends who don’t smoke). Good luck

While there is no sure way, you can try filling a little jelly jar half way with water, putting a couple cigarettes in it, carrying it around with you everyday (never forget it!) and smelling it when you crave. After a while, you will asscociate the nasty smell with smoking (not the cigarette) and you will hopefully just not want to smoke anymore! This worked for my uncle and i really hope it works for you!
trying to quit smoking after 33 years?

My parents are trying to quit smoking. my dad is 43 and has been smoking sens he was 10 -12. he is a heavy smoker, about a pack a day. my mom has been smoking for years also but not as heavy as a smoker. maybe 4 smokes a day (that’s still allot) they want to quit smoking cold turkey but i don’t believe it will work. they don’t have money to but the gum or anything. im not a smoker so i have no idea what to even help with. is there a true good method to quitting smoking after smoking the way they do?
I smoked for 26 years, and it was one of the hardest things to do. The last two years of smoking, I must have tried 20 times, and three times I made it two months. Finally I quit and never started again, and that was 9 years ago. I had books and information about smoking and quitting smoking and that helped alot. Had lots of unusual withdrawal symptoms too, like being energetic, or being groggy, coughing. The worse part was being grouchy or short tempered (nice words for being psycho), I think there is no avoiding that. Books and info helped to reinforce why I was quitting, very helpful. I did eat a lot of m&m’s once and gained weight, then when I started smoking again, the weight didn’t go away.

I used the patch, and it helps so much, I couldn’t have done it without it. The cost of a patch is the same as the price of package of cigs, and they last for years in the package.

A prize or something really helps, for me on some days it was fast food french fries. Get hobbies or books ready, and maybe hot chocolate. My thoughts back then was that I would do whatever it took, that I would never quit quitting until I succeeded. And I did.

It is so hard, but it is doable. Good luck (and hide).

I just quit smoking, and I have a question?

I just quit smoking using the cold turkey method, and so far, so good. I was wondering, however, why I’m so spaced out. I feel like I could go to sleep right now, sometimes I see stars, and I’m just dazed overall.

I’m not complaining, because I know there’s going to be some major physical changes. I’m just curious about what’s going on with this quit.

Tobacco is a stimulant, and depending how much you smoke and how you smoke it, it can be pretty strong. And addictive, tobacco is one of if not the hardest drug to give up. Going without the little push it gives you is noticeable for a while. Find some other stimulant, more coffee or strong tea.

I always noticed that while I felt sluggish and sleepy my now idle hands found ways to get me in trouble, shredding things, tapping things, etc. It takes weeks to get you body functioning normally and you have to make a conscious effort to shake you self awake and reach you smoker’s energy level.

The best way to stop smoking anything is to quit cold turkey. Only if you are serious about it. You can talk a good talk, but can you walk the walk???? You have to change everything you’ve done and who you’ve been hanging out with since you first began smoking. Are you ready to do that? If not, you can hang it up. Won’t work.

You can’t be around the stuff, can’t be around other people who use the stuff. For crying out loud, you have to quit buying it too!!

Get busy with your life! You have too much time on your hands. Change your routine, take up jogging, or working out, or better yet, try adopting someone less fortunate than yourself and spend some of that money you spend on weed in helping them. Not only will you get a wonderful “rush”, but you’ll really make someone’s day (or year). And you’ll take your mind off yourself and onto some kid who could use a friend or a new basketball, or an old lady who needs her house painted, or her plumbing fixed. See the tear in someone’s eye who is so grateful they are speechless because they know they can never repay you!!!!
Get on with it!!!!!!

Some side effects may be: tiredness, a GREAT desire to have “just a little” so you feel better……………DON’T. Just hang in there for about 3 days is all. Take lots of showers. It may be like quitting smoking….you will actually STINK as the stuff comes out of your system. So SHOWER, SHOWER, SHOWER. You may be nervous. You will want to think about it. So think about it and move on. You are either a weakling or you are strong. You get to choose.

But since you are more emotionally addicted than physically, you absolutely HAVE to change your routine and your friends.
I quit smoking cig. After 35 years. Cigs are physically addicting. I KNOW what I am talking about!! All this actually works!
Good luck…..pray daily!

Give your weed to your friends, stop buying, and just don’t take any hits whenever you’re with people smoking. If this was something you wanted to do on your own, I would highly suggest just learning to pace yourself and not getting blazed every single time. Since you really gotta stop, though, you might want to consider that if you plan on going to college, or if you already do, the happy fact that if you get busted with drugs, the government will not give you any financial aid.

How can you convince someone to stop smoking weed?

When I met my boyfriend 9 months ago he wouldn’t even think about smoking weed. Then one weekend 2 months later he went to his cousins house and they talked him into “trying” it. Well since then it seems he has became addicted! It’s all he wants to do. All day, Every day. I have smoked too but I don’t like it the way he does. He seems to think it’s the best thing ever… But to me it’s kind of just a waste of money. about 4 months ago he got caught… he was arrested and put on probation, however… his grandmother who he lives with works at the court house and got him off the hook. I’m not sure why she would want to do that? She doesn’t want him near any drugs but I think by doing that he didn’t learn his lesson at all! A couple days ago he turned 18 and now I am really worried about him getting caught again, I don’t want him going to jail! I would think he would be smarter seeing both of his parents in jail ever since he was 3 for meth labs ect. But he is very stubborn. He said he knew he needed to stop but couldn’t because if he did he wouldn’t have anyone to hang out with seeing as all of his guy friends smoke too. I don’t think I can convince him to stop… I think he needs to be the one to want to stop but I just want to trick him or something to where he will want to stop sooner. Any advice? sorry this was so long.

Try and hold on. I haven’t smoked since 1995. I quit cold turkey. It took about a week before I slept well. It is very important to increase your water intake at this time, because you need to help your body flush the toxins out of your system. You should also increase your exercise, since your brain is not getting the kick it was getting from the nicotine, you will need to get it to release endorphins another way, strenuous exercise will do this for you. If you can, try to cut down on red meat and increase your vegetable and fruit intake; for some reason red meat increases the desire for smoking. Don’t drink any alcohol at all during this time, alcohol triggers the desire for cigarettes. Best of luck!

You are just channeling the energy you want to put into smoking into eating. You need to find a better outlet for that energy. Try chewing gum or drinking lots of water. Or take up another hobby to do when you are hungry. It’s really just the urge to put something in your mouth.

You are likely constipated because of your change in diet. Go back to eating healthy foods and you’ll be fine. Use the same willpower you use to not smoke to not overeat.

Marijuana essay/letter?

I want to know what you think about it and if you can correct it. I also don’t know what to say in my concluding sentence. thx.

Dear Barbara Boxer,

Thank you for taking your time to acknowledge my thoughts and position. The reason I am writing to you is because I feel that the legalization of marijuana to legalize possessing and smoking the plant in California, beside for medical uses, should be reconsidered for another vote. It seems, to me, highly hypocritical to have both cigarettes and alcohol be legal and yet have marijuana that produces the same basic effect. I believe I have a firm stance on my position because I have packed my head with a copious amount of diverse researched information concerning the marijuana plant. There would be many commendable outcomes by making marijuana legal, but I also grasp the consequences of the action.
Benefiting California’s government would be as helpful as giving a voracious dog a slab of meat. We all know that California is in a need of finance assistance. I believe by making the marijuana plant legal in California, it would help our state tremendously. Our government could market and tax this plant resulting in a surplus of money that could be spent to help pay off our state’s debt or even help pay for educational programs to help benefit the future’s children. This is the kind of help we need in California. The plant would be easy to cultivate because it is a weed, and a fairly vivacious one at that. If we passed a law stating marijuana, sold by the state of California, is legal to smoke and possess, our state’s government would in a better finical situation than it is currently.
How much time is spent busting people who use marijuana in California? If California legalized marijuana, more time for law enforcement could go towards arresting other criminals. It would also cut down on California’s prison population, thus save tax payers a lot of money. If our state marketed marijuana it would decrease the street value of it leading to the decrease of funds in drug dealer’s pockets. I believe law enforcement has more important responsibilities such as exporting illegal immigrants out of California, shootings, robberies, etc. than arresting 60,481 individuals a year for marijuana possession. Also, by not legalizing marijuana in California, there is wasted jail space and clogged up court systems that should be occupied by other serious felons. Fighting the war on Marijuana is an expensive combat. If we would stop the reason for the “marijuana war” by legalizing the plant in our state, then there would be no war.
To every issue there are always two different views. The legalization of marijuana abides by this truth. I feel that the one of the consequences of legalizing the plant to smoke and possess it in California would be the harmful risks it attains. For example, Smoking marijuana regularly can impair the cells in the bronchial passages which defend the body against inhaled microorganisms and decrease the ability of the immune cells in the lungs to fight off fungi, bacteria, and tumor cells. There would be no way of stopping this from happening to marijuana smokers. If California could pass a state law stating that a limited quantity could be acquired weekly, it would slow the damaging of the cells in a smoker and other malignant risks. Another consequence would be the rising number of DUIs in California. To decrease that amount, California would need to heighten the consequence of driving while high or inebriated such as 2 years in jail and/or a 5,000 dollar fine. I understand the consequences of legalizing marijuana, but if California would deal with it properly, we would acknowledge the fact that marijuana has more beneficial outcomes than malicious effects.

Oh let me start by saying bravo!!! In fact, you should just allow me permission to say that I have always felt that the ENTIRE country should follow this suit exactly, I have two other valuable issues that you could add to your list if you are interested, email me and I will put a couple of cents worth in your brain to think about. I was just thinking about this subject and talk of it daily to my husband and a few friends about how many issues legalization would solve. I joked with a group of friends that I have single handedly solved all the worlds problems using only my brain and marijuana and my trampoline in the back yard after the kide were tucked away in thier beds. I am very interested in putting together a bill someday that will actually be taken seriously since I’m just a mom of three from a little town in Oklahoma. I believe I just need some partnership to point the way and tell me to “go get it done!”
I think the benefits would outweigh the risks and am working towards that goal and your letter is put together in a very friendly matter of fact tone that needs to be read by members of the U.S. Senate and Congress and attached to that bill they are trying to push through so fast, and say “here let this pay for it so the taxpayers will at least be getting something in return for footing the bill for this mess”….well anyway you have inspired me and I appreciate it!! I just watched this link below and googled “the marijuana answer” and clicked on your question that was returned in the search….how interesting is that? It’s the pot, it gives me psychic powers…I’m just kidding, I look forward to hearing back though.

What do people hate so much about Marijuana?

There is no way it can kill people. It doesn’t effect your health except for having a decrease in lung capacity by a maximum of 3%, and actually has more benefits than any other prescription drug on the market. Do we still demonize a plant that has been proved over and over as harmless, and cause gangs to rise as a result of it, simply because our politicians do not have the balls to admit they have been wrong all along? I mean we have people getting killed over this stuff in places like Mexico because of the drug cartels. Shouldn’t we stop supporting the deaths and tortures of these people by legalizing this plant? It’s a plant, a plant that is a miracle, and for some pointless reason we have to deal with people who are either too inept to actually take a minute and learn about the lies our government has been spitting at us, or people who are generally hateful towards the plant because it gets people high. Guess what else people like to do? Drink. People like to drink, and drinking is way more deadly than smoking pot, because you CAN’T be harmed by smoking pot. Knowing all this information how could anyone want pot to be illegal?
CandS, first of all those are two massive lies. There has never been a recorded case of cancer in a pure pot smoker’s lung. The plant is not radioactive, thus cancer is not viable. Also, the brain cell thing. Want to know how our government tested this? They took 6 monkeys and strapped a gas mask to their face and forced 6 grams of marijuana down their throats with no oxygen for 5 minutes. After a minute without air a person will start to lose brain cells, smoking pot will not kill brain cells. Next time when you decide to call someone out, make sure you actually know the facts.

admin answers:

Watch mainstream documentaries and things about pot, they are negative. It started a long time ago. Hemp was a threat to a number of large industries because of the various things that you can make out of it, so it was illegalized mostly due to the coercion of large companies who didn’t want to deal with the competition. It has been propaganda ever since. I agree, it should be legalized.

That being said, not all of what you said is true. Pot, I agree, is much less dangerous than alcohol. To some it is totally harmless, to others it has been shown to cause an increase in mental diseases. But you are right, any harm it can do, very little, is not worth the violence and cartels that keeping it illegal creates.

-Edit- Pot killing brain cells is speculative, there has been research that goes both ways. Also, there has been research done that THC, the active ingredient in pot, has the potential to greatly SHRINK lung tumors.

How often should I exercise?

Ok so 30 mins a day is recommended but each person has their own circumstances.
Myself Im a male 33 years old and Ive just quit smoking 6 weeks today. In those 6 weeks Ive taken to swimming and push myself very hard in the pool to the point my muscles hurt and my lungs cant keep up. I do physical work that involves much lifting and walking 5 days a week and I usually hit the pool after a 10-12 hour shift and have been doing 11 laps of a 50 metre pool (550mtrs) of freestyle only. I can swim the first 100 metres without stopping but then need to stop from 30 seconds to a minute between each 50 metres after that. Ive increased to 11 laps from 10 in the past week after beginning doing just 6 laps when I started. Ive also just been able to swim the first 100 mtrs without stopping in the past week while earlier I was struggling to finish the first 50. So my fitness has improved and results are slowly getting better. I swim 5-7 times a week.
Now last night I decided not to swim for the first time in the last 7 days. I was too sore and tired. I thought Id make up for it today but today Ive been home lazy doing nothing and still sore and tired. I want to go to the pool and swim but Im sure if I do Ill be sore and tired again tomorrow. Infact ever since I started swimming most the time I am sore and tired. Especially in the morning when I get up early for work and just feel like Im wasted. Honestly apart from swimming longer and faster the only result Ive had is fatigue and exhaustion.
So Im worried Im over exercising. I dont know if I am but I dont want to exercise more than I should and miss out on any benefit I may have from resting. Id prefer to swim everyday as I lead a very uneventful life and swimming has given me a goal to reach. I want to reach elite athlete status physically or at least as close as I can given the fact I only get an hr a day tops to actually train. But I like the challenge and I want to be in optimal fitness so Im determined to give as much as I can to this goal.
So my question is with the above information and scenario how much and how often should I be swimming and am I doing enough, too much or not enough and how will it affect my daily energy levels? Will pushing myself when I am sore and tired (like now) do good or not?

First off, major congrats to you quitting a very disgusting habit – smoking.

Don’t push yourself too hard though otherwise you might be overworking yourself which you might not want to do. Let your body recharge itself for a few days.. Your muscles cannot be too overworked, they need to be rested at least for a day in between two days.

I used to be on the varsity swim team of my high school about 2 years back and we were defin tip-top shape. As long as you take about a full hour – hour and a 1/2, you will be drained but radiant with energy because swimming in my opinion, is the Best workout!

Just continue doing laps and take a break if you need to in between. You seem to be doing great

Oh and the only reason weed is illegal is because the gov hasnt found an efficient way of taxing and they are worried that people will just grow their own instead of buying it since its so much easier to grow then tobacco, tobacco takes skill

i have asked a local diesel expert for advice and he said its probably the advance solanoid

so i purchased 1 from him but before i fitted it i disconected the old 1 and started it up , it ran pretty smooth and the smoke stopped.!

then i took the old solanoid out and fitted the new one and it started smoking and ran terrible again also when you run the engine without the solanoid connected it become louder!

anyway what i need to no is what this solanoid does and would it harm the engine to run without it?

any advice would be good

Can weed help withdrawal symptoms of a pain killer addict?

I know someone who has been on Suboxone since April for a pain killer addiction and this person now wants to stop the suboxone. I was reading a sub forum where some people said smoking weed can help with the withdrawal symptoms, is this true?
Yeah I know it’s like replacing one with another but the Subs are killing this person’s body–extreme moodiness, sleep apnea, chest pains, tiredness….I rather this person do nothing but I’d rather them smoke then continue with the pills….it’s a lose-lose situation either way though.

It’s helpful for many other things (such as side effects for chemotherapy, cancer itself, AIDS) because it has good anti-nausea and anti-pain effects. So I don’t see why it wouldn’t also help for drug withdrawal symptoms.

However, while cannabis is not physically addictive, it can be psychologically addictive, and you are putting yourself at risk for replacing one addiction with another.

For the experienced pot and hash smokers, help with anxiety problem when smoking pot?

Hey i am 17 and i have smoked weed like 8-10 times now and the last 4 times have been bad for me because i keep gettin anxiety when i smoke like a racing heart beat which scares me and i cant stop thinking about it,one time my mate brought some albanian weed or blue cheese and it was some strong shit and since i am not a experienced pot smoker, i had a bad trip/high because my heart was beating so fast and i was falling asleep when walking in the high street which both made me scared that i thought i was goin 2 die.
i dont really want to quit because i like it alot and i want to know should i keep smoking weed to try and build a tolerance to it or should i switch to hash even though i have never tried it before or will it make me have a powerful anxiety attack? i heard in some forums that people do not get anxiety attacks when smoking on their own because they only got it cause they were uncomfortable smoking with friends, when i am given a joint to smoke and im with my college mates who i have known for 5-6 months i get a freeze in my body and my hands start 2 shake a little, does that mean that my mind and body is uncomfortable with smoking with them? maybe it because i dont really know them that well? thanks

Still high 5 days after smoking?

About a month ago I tried weed for the first time, went fine, did it 3 nights in a row, woke up fine the next day each time. This past week a friend told me I should try this k2 spice stuff, apparently still legal in the US and contains a synthetic version of THC known as jwh-018. At least that was my understanding of it. Went and bought some about a week ago from a local smoke shop, smoked it that night… bam high. End up doing it 5 nights in a row, the last night being Sunday. Each day I felt completely normal until Monday morning I’m sitting in class and I start feeling what I’ve come to find out via these forums is called “phantom high.” (Basically a disorientation along with a light head buzz similar to the feeling to get right BEFORE you get high) Okay, one day of it isn’t that bad. Today is Friday, I can’t stop it and it’s getting annoying. It comes and goes but as soon as I think about it, I’m high in 20 minutes…. again. Hard to concentrate/function/enjoy it when it’s ALL THE TIME. I can’t understand why this would happen after 5 nights of k2 spice and not after 4? The only thing I can think of is that I had A glass of wine about 2 hours before the 5th nights session, let me repeat (1 glass of wine).

I tried running, works during, not after. I tried gallons of water, just had to pee all day. I tried eating, does absolutely nothing. Fresh air helps a little bit, along with some Arizona sunshine, but by no means gets me sober.

Has this happened to anybody else? How’d you cope/get rid of it? How long did it last?
Any more suggestions from anyone? I’m literally about to find a suana and sit in it for 10 hours so I can sweat out the toxins and finally write a damn research paper… I will try anything

It didn’t work for me, but I think a part of you really needs to want to quit first. I’d class it as an assistive tool rather than a cure tool. The Society of Clinical and Experiment Hypnosis http://www.sceh.us/
and the American Psychotherapy & Medical Hypnosis Association http://APMHA.com/

Been smoking on and off for past 4 years – nearly 5 – and I want to quit.
How to quit smoking.?

I’ve been smoking cigarettes forever. When I was in the single digits of age my friends and I would always steal them from our parents and sneak off to smoke because we thought we were cool. I always smoked socially or when stressed. I started smoking a pack a day when I was sixteen. I am currently nineteen. Between those ages I randomly swing back and forth between one and two packs a day. I have tried to slowly decrease how many I smoke a day until I had fully stopped. It never works. I find the nicotene gun disgusting, smoking is cheaper than buying the patches, and finding a hobby to help keep my mind off of cigarettes doesn’t work. It‘s extra hard to quit because my parents, my grandparents, all my friends, and my girlfriend all smoke. I’ve tried countless times to quit. The longest I made it was four days. Every time I go a day or two something stressful always happens and causes me to smoke. I don’t have the money for hypnosis or anything like that to make me quit. I also have weak willpower which is important for quitting. Any suggestions or anything anybody has done that made it easier to quit?

admin answers:

Quitting smoking is tough. I started when I was 12 and smoked until age 31. I think I was hooked within a few days of starting. When I did finally manage to quit 19 years later I was smoking 2 &1/2 packs a day. For a long time I didn’t even try because I had been so discouraged from previous failed attempts to quit I was convinced I was hopelessly hooked. But now I know you should never give up.

You are right about the willpower being important. You have to really really want to quit. The patch or gum or other aids won’t work if you don’t have a strong desire to kick the habit. To be able to quit you are going to need the right mindset. Nicotine is more addictive than heroin or cocaine and therefore requires a great deal of determination in order to beat it.

First of all you should want to quit for yourself, not to please somebody else. Then you should know exactly why you want to quit. There are many good reasons to quit, for me the effects on my health and being a slave to the habit were high among them.

It is best if you come to really hate tobacco. Don’t look upon it wistfully and say “gee I miss that”, rather “I hate being its slave and will be so glad to be done with it”. Mindset is everything. Do not say you are “trying” to quit; you are quitting. When I thought like that I was finally successful.

Once you come to the proper mindset that you are in fact going to quit this disgusting unhealthy habit, things like gum or the patch can help to take the edge off. I used Nicoderm CQ patch for the full 10-week program. You will experience cravings, but if you see those cravings as your enemy and ignore them they won’t last long and will come less frequently over time. It gets better the longer you can tough it out, I promise.

Perhaps if you smash your cigarettes when you quit it will help you both by removing any immediate temptations, and letting you express some dislike of tobacco. And it will help to avoid second-hand smoke as much as possible too. Most people nowadays are aware of the dangers of second-hand smoke and are willing to go outside to smoke as a courtesy. Wouldn’t hurt to ask in your case.

Stay strong and focused on why you want to quit and how nice it will be to be free of the habit.

Anyone have any ideas on how to quit smoking?

And I don’t mean taking a walk after a meal or chewing gum..I’ve tried all that, it doesn’t help.

I have tried the patch, the gum, the lozenges, the spray, none of it has worked. I don’t know if it‘s me really not wanting to quit (because I really truly do, I just enjoy smoking, that’s the bad part) or if those products just don’t work.

I seriously cannot quit cold turkey. I have tried so many times and I get frustrated and pissed off and makes me want a cig even more. I want to set a good example but it‘s so fricken hard…

I recently quit myself.
It was difficult because I too enjoyed smoking, but I had to do more than just want to quit. All smokers want to quit, but to make the commitment is the hard part.
You have to decide to commit to becoming smoke free and then do it. Everyday is a struggle and if you’re looking for an easy way out you will never find it, but just because it’s difficult doesn’t mean it’s impossible.
Sure, smoking is enjoyable, but you know what’s more enjoyable? Breathing, running, not coughing up black ****. The struggle is worth it and it gets easier with time.
I used the gum as a tool to curb the cravings, everyone is different. You can’t expect any treatment to make the addiction go away completely. You need will power.
I hope you find your inspiration to quit, good luck to you.

I want to quit smoking, but…?

I have been a smoker for 17 years and I’m ready to quit!!! I HATE cigarettes. I hate the smell, the cost, the risks…everything about them. I also hate the way I feel when I try to quit. I’m anxious, nervous, irritated, mad, depressed, moody, emotional…the whole gamut.

I have tried gums, patches, fake cigarettes, everything you can probably think of before and it didn’t work. I read about this product called CigArrest, which is supposed to help you quit in two weeks guaranteed. But…you order it in a NINETY DAY SUPPLY. Why on Earth would you need NINETY DAYS worth of something if you are guaranteed to quit in two weeks? This seems like another scam to me so I’m coming here for help.

Anyone know the best way to quit? And don’t tell me cold turkey because I’ve tried ten dozen times and it doesn’t work.

I recommend cutting down gradually until your quit date. I did this. I cut down to half a pack. I did this for three months. I smoked by the puff, not by the cigarette. I took only the amount of nicotine that was necessary to satisfy my urge to smoke and put the rest of the cigarette out.

After doing this for three months I quit cold turkey.

Now I’m eating more candy to distract me but its been 10 months. I have urges but they don’t last more than a second or two. If they’re lasting more than that then you’re concentrating on the cigarette. Don’t do it. Concentrate on something else.

2) Sad sometimes (I feel quiet emotional & I cry but sometimes I feel that it’s probably because I can’t just go punching like something inside of me sometimes wants to so I try getting it out with tears maybe I guess)
3) Pain (I get a lot of tension headaches & stomach pain/cramps)
4) Hot (1 minute I’m hot & the next I’m cold)
5) Sick stomach feeling (I feel nauseated often)
6) Body feels weird ( Sometimes throughout my arms and/or legs it feels as if something is flowing throughout my veins that doesn’t feel too good & is actually rather bothersome to me & I feel the need or urge to flex (squeeze) my muscles really tight in my arms and/or legs then release several times or sometimes I shake and/or move my legs and/or arms excessively & purposely to help me.

I do not feel these ways 24/7 but I do feel these ways more so now than in the beginning. I still at times find myself wanting a cigarette just like I have from day 1 but not all the time, I don’t think about smoking as much as I did in the beginning.

Are all of my symptoms from quitting smoking or have I gone crazy?
If it’s from quitting then when will it ever stop affecting me as it is?
What is wrong with me?

Also… How does the people that don’t drink on the daily, smoke cigarettes or do any drugs cope with sadness, stress and/or just everyday life?

That’s quite normal. Remember that you’re giving up a powerful drug that you’ve been taking for 15 years – it’s bound to take a long time for your body and mind to adjust to it’s absence, but they will. Not only that, but when you’re still in withdrawal a few weeks down the line, it can be hard to find the resolve and determination that you had on the first day. However, do keep it together, it will get easier and at some point it’ll eventually cease to be an issue or even something that you give much thought to. The benefits to your health are well worth enduring this for a while longer.

Have you had success in quitting smoking with the electronic cigarette?

I’m desperately wanting to quit smoking. Not only for myself, but for my fiance; she hates it. Have you had ANY success quitting or at least curbing the crave using one of those new electronic cigarettes? The advertisements look too flashy and fake so idk what to think. That’s why I’d rather have an answer from someone that has personal experience with them. Thank you!

Didn’t work for me (I quit thanks to http://stopsmoking.eu.pn/) but everyone is different in the way they stop smoking, so what worked for me might not work for you. The only way to tell if any given method works or not for you is to try it, ¡Anything to stop that habit is worth it!

Hope this helps

does fake smoking harm you?

my friends been smoking for about a year now but decided to quit about 2 months ago. she tried everything from quitting cold turkey, to those patch things and to gum, and nothing works. so a friend told her she should make fake cigarettes using paper and filling it with the inside of a tea bag and smoking it like that- kinda like a fake rollie. and she said it really works, and she’s cut back soo much yet it still looks tastes and has the same feel of normal cigarrets, and i agree because i tried it, i honestly felt like i was smoking a normal cigarette because it tastes the same (by the way, im not a smoker)

but what i was really wondering was is this doing any harm to her like normal cigarretes do? i sound really stupid but you never know, will it harm her??

thanks :]

Well, if the herbs she is putting in them are safe to consume then it’s probably fine. Smoking in general isn’t good because you are inhaling smoke. And cigarette/ rolling papers have arsenic in them (in the lines on them), which is like rat poison or something, so that isn’t totally fine either. But it is definitely way better than regular cigarettes.

She might want to look into Blu Electronic Cigarettes. It’s $60 for a starter kit, which sounds like a lot. But once you buy that, the cartridges (equivalent of a pack of cigarettes) are only $4 – $5 each. They still feel like smoke filling up your lungs. They have no tar, no carcinogens, and run on a battery (rechargeable).. Which means no secondhand smoke either. Oh, and no smell that sticks to you, or stinks up your house or office…. And no weird taste in your mouth afterwards. They DO taste really good, and there is tobacco-flavored also, which actually tastes pretty close to tobacco. There are also vanilla, menthol, cherry, and java. I used it for a few months, and was then able to quit. You ARE getting nicotine still, so they aren’t designed as a quitting thing. But they definitely worked for me….

How can I quit smoking?

I want to be a better person and better persons don’t smoke. However I lack any kind of willpower to stop and I really really enjoy it.

I’ve tried medications in the past, but that made me suicidal
I’ve tried the gum, the patch and the lozenges and none of them worked. I’ve tried to pacify with a fake cigarette. I even bought a juicer thinking that I would substitute cigarettes for a healthy juiced carrot!

Every time I get the idea in my head that I’m going to quit, I end up smoking tons more just to get as much in before I don’t have them anymore.

What can I do?
